al-Khirrīt ibn Rāshid al-Nājī — with three hundred of Banū Nājiya who had fought beside ʿAli at the Camel and Ṣiffīn — declared: «by God I will not obey your command nor pray behind you, and tomorrow I leave you«. ʿAli offered to debate him through Book and Sunna; the Khirrit answered «you set men to arbitrate and grew weak from the truth, siding with the wrongdoers», and rode out that night. ʿAli said «away with them as Thamūd was cast away«, and they killed a Muslim dihqān before Ziyād was ordered in pursuit 1.

Summary

Khirrit ibn Rashid al-Naji was among the first to part from Ali after the arbitration. He had three hundred men of Banu Naji with him, who had fought at the Camel and at Siffin. He came to Ali with thirty riders and said: "By God, I will not obey your command, nor will I pray behind you, and tomorrow I part from you." Ali offered to study the Book with him and debate him on the sunan, but he refused, saying: "You appointed arbiters and grew weak before the truth and leaned toward the people who did wrong, so I am hostile to you and resentful of them." He left that night with his companions. Ali said, "Away with them, as Thamud was taken away." Then they openly raided, until they killed a notable of the dihqans who had converted to Islam, and Ali ordered Ziyad to pursue them. 1.

Ali burns people in Kufa who claimed he was God

Ali was told that people at the mosque door called him their lord; he said he was only a servant like them, gave them three days, and when they persisted he lit a fire and burned them. Al-Sallabi cites the report via al-Bukhari, Ibn Abbas's objection that the Prophet forbade punishment by fire, and Ibn Taymiyya's statement that Ali burned most of those who believed in his divinity.
