Summary
On 30 November 642/1244 Jalal al-Din met the wandering dervish Shams al-Din of Tabriz in the streets of Konya — the decisive moment of his life, for Shams's overwhelming personality revealed to him the mysteries of divine majesty and beauty. 1
Departure and return
The two mystics lived closely together for months while Jalal al-Din neglected his disciples and family, until the jealousy of his entourage forced Shams to leave town in February 643/1246; Rumi was heartbroken, and his eldest son Sultan Walad finally brought Shams back from Syria. 1
