Overview
Ibn al-Athir, in "al-Kamil", relates that the king of the Germans set out in 586 AH, when the Muslims' conquest of Jerusalem disturbed him. He marched on Constantinople, and the Byzantine king sent to Salah al-Din to inform him. 1
The route
The Byzantine king cut off their supplies, so provisions ran short until they crossed into the realm of Qilij Arslan the Seljuk. The Turkmen rose against them, killing anyone who was left alone, and it was winter. The cold and hunger destroyed them. 1
They then marched toward the land of the Armenians and then Antioch. The king of the Germans, Frederick Barbarossa, is mentioned as one drowned in the title of the account. 1
