Overview
Al-Tirmidhi settled back at his town after completing his scholarly journey and devoted himself to authorship and revision 1.
The Jami' and his books
He composed the Jami' known as the Sunan of al-Tirmidhi — one of the Six Books — with 3,956 traditions over fifty well-ordered chapters, appending the Kitab al-Ilal al-Saghir as a statement of his method in grading hadith sahih, hasan and gharib, an integral part and gateway to the Jami' 3 2; he presented it to the critics of the Muslim East who approved it, holding that whoever had this book had, as it were, a Prophet speaking in his house 4. He also gathered the Kitab al-Shama'il al-Muhammadiyya on the Prophet's characteristics 2.
