Tarteel (app)

Tarteel is a Qur'an app that listens to a reader's recitation and corrects mistakes; it presents itself as using AI to give live feedback on recitation. Its team says the name comes from the Qur'an itself, from the command to recite the Qur'an with tartil in Surat al-Muzzammil, verse 4. ^{1 2}

Writing in January 2020, the team says Tarteel had launched "last year", and that since then it had worked to make it easier for Muslims to learn to read the Qur'an, especially those with little access to imams and shaykhs. That year it started a recitation-collection initiative and received more than 80,000 recordings, acquired the Iqra app and built ayah voice search on it, and was testing a first version of recitation transcription. ² In September 2019 the team announced that it had been accepted into MIT's Sandbox startup accelerator for the Fall 2019 cohort, with funding and mentorship from MIT, to develop its machine-learning technology. ¹

The Tarteel app came out on iOS and Android on 9 January 2020, as its users' most requested feature; Iqra's users were moved to it with their previous features, which is why its Google Play package still carries Iqra's old id. ^{2 3} The team says it added new features thanks to users' feedback and donations. ²

On 6 November 2026 the app's Google Play page, "Tarteel: AI Quran Memorization" by Tarteel Inc., showed 10M+ Android downloads and a rating of 4.8 from about 124,000 reviews. ³
