Summary

Abu al-Abbas Ma'mun ibn Ma'mun succeeded Ali ibn Ma'mun; the author, following Bosworth, dates his reign 399–407 AH (1008–1017). 1 Among the main events of his reign was the Abbasid caliph's sending him an envoy and a title, which appears on a dirham he struck in 405/1014. 1 2

The dirham of 405 AH

Its obverse carries the profession of God's oneness followed by "al-Qadir bi-llah, and his heir al-Ghalib bi-llah", with the remains of a margin reading "…the dirham in the city of Khwarazm in the year five…". 2 The reverse reads "Muhammad is the Messenger of God ﷺ; Ayn al-Dawla wa Zayn al-Milla Abu al-Abbas Khwarazm[shah]", surrounded by wording from al-Tawba 9:33, al-Saff 61:9 and al-Fath. 2 It weighs 7.10 g and measures 33–35 mm. 2 The author notes that this ruler's coins use a single kind of title. 3

Afterwards

In 1017 Mahmud of Ghazna conquered Khwarazm and placed his governor Altuntash over it. 4
