EducationSpirituality and Sufism
Al-Sadr Sulayman al-Ubshithi
Al-Sadr Sulayman ibn ʿAbd al-Nasir al-Ubshithi, later of Cairo, a Shafiʿi Sufi. In earlier days he devoted himself to worship, and he narrated hadith. He studied jurisprudence, taught, instructed, issued legal opinions, preached and stayed at al-Shaykhuniyya. Later he took up Sufism and performed the pilgrimage, and he was several times the judge of the pilgrimage caravan. He wrote a commentary on Ibn Malik's "Alfiyya" and other works.
He wished to study logic, but the many objections raised against him by those who debated with him about it discouraged him. He put the "Shamsiyya" (a logic textbook) in his sleeve and went to Shaykh al-Huraifish, asking his advice on his situation. At the mere sight of him, the shaykh said, "God has favoured us with His Mighty Book, and with grammar and the principles of law; what have we to do with logic?" He repeated this, and the other went back, and this was counted among the marvels of the two of them. Among his other marvels: he used to come to attend lessons at al-Shaykhuniyya, dismount from his mule and send it off alone, and the mule would go to its stable and then return when the lesson had ended, neither more nor less than usual.
He died in 887 AH, at about eighty years of age 1.
