Summary
Qutb al-Din al-Qastallani, the imam — Egyptian then Meccan — studied Shafi'i fiqh, gave fatwas, and travelled in 649, hearing hadith at Baghdad, Egypt, Syria and the Jazira. He was one who combined learning and practice, dignity and scrupulosity. 1
Against Ibn Sab'in
There was enmity between him and Ibn Sab'in, and he denounced at Mecca much of the man's conduct; he composed a work on the sect that follows Ibn Sab'in's way, beginning with al-Hallaj and ending with al-'Afif al-Tilimsani. He was a refuge for the poor and the arriving, kind and helpful to them; he was called away from Mecca, and the shaykhate of the Kamiliyya dar al-hadith at Cairo was conferred on him. 1
