Summary

In 297 Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Faryabi, on the caliphal vizier Ibn al-Furat's orders, met Subkari at the gate of Shiraz, defeated him twice and besieged him in the city, until Subkari fled into the Khurasan desert road and al-Faryabi took Fars for the caliph's army. 1

Subkari turns to rebellion

When Mu'nis returned without Subkari, his secretary Abd al-Rahman ibn Ja'far took control of affairs; Subkari's men resented him and spread word that he was the caliph's own secretary who had bound most of the commanders by oath. He was seized, fettered and imprisoned, and Isma'il ibn Ibrahim al-Batti was made secretary in his place — who pushed Subkari into rebellion and withheld what was due to the caliph. 2

The battle at the gate of Shiraz

Ibn al-Furat saw that Mu'nis leaned toward Subkari, so he detached the secretary Wasif, a body of commanders and Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Faryabi, and charged him with the conquest of Fars. Muhammad ibn Ja'far marched to Fars and met Subkari at the gate of Shiraz; Subkari broke for the city and fortified himself inside it. 2

Siege and second defeat

Al-Faryabi pursued and besieged him there; Subkari sallied out and fought a second battle, was defeated and his baggage plundered. He entered the Khurasan desert road, where the lord of Khurasan caught him, while Muhammad ibn Ja'far took possession of Fars and appointed over it Qanbaj, the Anashin servant; the correct account is that the conquest of Fars was in 298. 1

al-Layth al-Saffar seizes Fars and Shiraz, 297

In 297 al-Layth ibn Ali ibn al-Layth marched from Sistan into Fars and seized it; Subkari, al-Muqtadir's governor, fled to Arrajan, so the caliph sent Mu'nis al-Khadim to Fars in support, and the two joined at Arrajan. Al-Layth sent his brother with part of the army to hold Shiraz, then took a shortcut to meet al-Husayn ibn Hamdan. The force sent to Shiraz caught sight of Mu'nis's and Subkari's army, which fell on them; after hard fighting al-Layth's army broke and he was taken prisoner, and Mu'nis carried him to Baghdad.
