Ali ibn Abi Talib accepts Islam as a boy

between 610 and 622 CE

Mecca

Ali grew up in the Prophet ﷺ's household after a famine led the Prophet and al-Abbas to take charge of his upbringing; he followed the Prophet from the start of the mission, and the Sunni author counts him the first boy to believe.

Opinions on the question

The question: Who believed first after Khadija: Abu Bakr or Ali?

First opinion · Sunni tradition (the museum's frame)Main reference

Al-Sallabi prefers the view that Abu Bakr was the first free man and Ali the first boy to believe, citing Ibn Ishaq's account that the Prophet took Ali into his own care during a famine before the mission (pp. 31-32).

Other sources record Abu Bakr as the first man; the summary of the wider debate over boys needs a named reference (needs_source).

The three years of the secret call

The first stage of the call to Islam — individual and secret for three years — in which the first band believed: Khadija, Ali, Zayd and Abu Bakr on the first day, then those whom Abu Bakr called, then a company Ibn Hisham numbers at over forty from every clan of Quraysh; during it prayer was first prescribed.
