Overview

Khadija bint Khuwaylid, Mother of the Believers, died in Ramadan of the tenth year of the mission, about two or three months after the death of Abu Talib. She was sixty-five years old, and the Prophet was fifty. 1 2

What she was to the Prophet

Khadija remained with him for a quarter of a century. She was tender to him in the hour of his anxiety, supported him in his most trying times, helped him in conveying his message, shared with him the burdens of struggle, and comforted him with herself and her wealth. 1 Ahmad relates that the Prophet said that she believed in him when the people disbelieved, confirmed him when the people denied him, and shared her wealth with him when the people withheld from him. 1 3

The message of Gabriel

In the authentic report on the authority of Abu Hurayra (may God be pleased with him), Gabriel came to the Prophet and said: "This is Khadija, who has come to you with a vessel containing food or drink. When she comes to you, convey to her greetings from her Lord, and give her the good news of a house in Paradise of pearl, with no clamour in it and no weariness." 1 4

Notes for researchers

The three years of the secret call

The first stage of the call to Islam — individual and secret for three years — in which the first band believed: Khadija, Ali, Zayd and Abu Bakr on the first day, then those whom Abu Bakr called, then a company Ibn Hisham numbers at over forty from every clan of Quraysh; during it prayer was first prescribed.
