Summary

Savshafan (also given as Shavshafar) was an Afrighid Khwarazmshah. The author reports from al-Biruni's list, in Sachau's edition, that Shavshafar son of Azkajamuk came to the throne in the mid-eighth century, which Vainberg confirmed, and from Chinese sources that the Khwarazmshah Savshafan sent an envoy to China in 751. 1

His coins

  • His drachms are Vainberg's type "GV"; their chief feature is that his name is written on the obverse in Sogdian, read "Shavshparn" by Livshits, and on the reverse in Old Khwarezmian, "ruler king Savshafan". 1
  • A. V. Kuznetsov divided his silver drachms into four groups differing in details of the image; in the fourth a cross stands behind the king's bust, and around the horseman on the reverse are a crescent, a star, a sun and a fish; they weigh about 3.1 g. 1 2
  • His copper coins are type "GV/9a"; the largest known weighs 5.50 g. 2

The author places before him another king, Shavat, read by V. Artev on coins formerly attributed to Savshafan. 3
