Summary

A lesson series by Omar Abdelkafy, given during the blessed month he calls the month of mercy. Each episode takes one story from the Qur'an or from a sound hadith, tells it, and then draws the lessons from it. ¹ ²

His method for Qur'anic stories

He says the Qur'anic story differs from human stories: it often does not name its people, places or times, because its purpose is the lesson and not the wording or the name. ³ ⁴ ⁵

Structure of an episode

Each episode tells a story from the Book and from the sound Sunna, then pauses on the lessons and admonitions a listener can take from it. ⁵ ⁶

Stories in the first episode

The story of the two sons of Adam, which he describes as the first killing in human history. ⁷ ⁸
The story of Nuh and his son, who said he would seek a mountain to protect him from the water; he says the son was among the drowned. ⁹ ¹⁰
The story of Ibrahim: his leaving Ismail and his mother Hajar in Makka, the exchange about the sacrifice and its ransom, and his raising of the foundations of the House with Ismail. ¹¹ ¹² ¹³ ¹⁴ ¹⁵
The story of Musa's mother, who was told to nurse him and then to set him on the river if she feared for him; he then describes his being taken into Pharaoh's household. ¹⁶ ¹⁷

Episode 2: the story of Musa and al-Khidr, and other stories

In the second episode he continues his method: the Qur'anic story is present as if seen, and its lesson matters more than the names of its figures. ¹⁸ ¹⁹

The story of Musa and al-Khidr: Musa asks to learn from him; al-Khidr makes a condition that Musa not ask about anything until it is explained; then the boat is broken and a wall is repaired for a miserly people, and Musa objects each time. ¹⁹ ²⁰ ²¹ ²²
His lesson: when one person breaks with another over three matters, the outcome is "this is parting between me and you"; he applies this to whoever disobeys God. ²³
The story of Maryam: he presents her labour at the palm trunk as a miracle, then the infant's speech in the cradle affirming his servanthood to God. ²⁴ ²⁵
The story of Zakariya: he says Zakariya was chosen by lot to care for Maryam, then found out-of-season fruit with her, and she said it was from God. ²⁶ ²⁷
The story of Sulayman and the hoopoe: the hoopoe was missed, returned with news from Sheba, and he describes Bilqis entering a palace with a glass floor and submitting. ²⁸ ²⁹
The story of Yunus in the whale: his prayer and his rescue. ³⁰
He addresses those who indulge in what God forbade, hoping Ramadan will be a decisive turning point for them. This is his exhortation, not a ruling on any person. ³¹

Episode 3: Ibrahim in the valley of Makka

The third episode tells the story of Ibrahim, and he reads it as showing that civilisation grows from inside a person, not from the resources of a place. ³² ³³

He asks whether civilisations arise outside or inside a person, and answers, as his own view, that civilisation comes from a person's connection with his Lord, even in the middle of a desert. ³⁴ ³⁵
He notes the common idea that civilisations arise on riverbanks, and says the story of Ibrahim in a valley without farmland goes against it. ³³ ³⁶
He takes from the House that it calls back the wanderer to his Lord, and explains the takbir at the start of ihram as meaning that God is greater than everything. ³⁷ ³⁸
He says a test can come as blessing or as hardship, and that a blessing may look good and still be a trial. ³⁹ ⁴⁰
He describes Ibrahim's giving: his body to the fire, his food to guests, and his son as a sacrifice. ⁴¹
He advises parents this month to tell a child they hope he will become an imam who guides people. ⁴²

Episode 4: the owner of the two gardens

He opens by saying that people are either afflicted or spared, and asks listeners to thank God for wellbeing and to be merciful to the afflicted: someone who in Ramadan is still afflicted with smoking, drink or drugs should not be shamed but prayed for, and he warns against shaming a brother for a sin lest God heal him and afflict you. ⁴³ ⁴⁴ He criticises the habit of each person treating himself as an angel and the other as a devil. ⁴⁵ He then sets out the Qur'anic parable of two men, one of whom was given two gardens of vines surrounded by palms, with crops between them and a river running through them; he describes the scene as if a camera were showing it, and notes that their irrigation was in the owner's hands and did not wait for rain. ⁴⁶ ⁴⁷ The lesson he draws is that the rich man forgot that the Giver is God, and slid from one sin to a worse one, from denying the favour to denying the Hour; the danger is to forget the Giver and remember only the gift. ⁴⁸ ⁴⁹ ⁵⁰ See the story of the owner of the two gardens.

He compares the man's boast “I have more wealth than you" with some developed nations telling others that they produce and the rest consume; he holds that Muslims fall short if they remain consumers, and reports the scholars' view that all Muslims are in sin if others excel in a useful science and they do not delegate some of their sons to excel in it. ⁵¹ ⁵²
He likens the man's trust that his garden would never perish to the claim of the capitalist system that it will never stop, then mentions the financial crisis. This is his view. ⁴⁹
He says that one who is not guided grieves over this world because it is his only chance, whereas the believer is in a temporary training stage; he says he collected 120 situations of the Prophet ﷺ in joy and sorrow and found that he rejoiced only for religion and grieved only for religion (the number is his statement; needs_source). ⁵³ ⁵⁴
He mentions the poem “The Clay” (al-Tin) by Iliya Abu Madi, saying it was written when a brother of the poet became a minister and grew proud towards him, and urges listeners to read it in his diwan (the occasion is his account; needs_source). ⁵⁵
He closes: giving is not a sign of God's pleasure nor withholding a sign of His anger; both are a trial, so the rich should give thanks, the poor be patient, and the rich not look down on the poor; he cites a hadith that an atom's weight of pride bars a person from paradise. ⁵⁶

Episode 5: the people of the town and Habib al-Najjar

He says that truth never lacks supporters, urges listeners to raise the banner of truth and never back falsehood, and tells how a man asked al-Hasan al-Basri whether he sinned by sewing al-Hajjaj's clothes, and was told: you are like al-Hajjaj. ⁵⁷ ⁵⁸ He then tells the story of the people of the town: two messengers were sent to them and rejected, a third was sent to reinforce them, and the people answered that they were only human like themselves; the first thing messengers meet, he says, is denial. ⁵⁸ ⁵⁹ ⁶⁰

He digresses to the story of Abdullah ibn Salam and his Jewish community, who praised him when asked about him and reviled him once he declared his Islam. ⁶⁰ ⁶¹ ⁶²
He says the man who came urging his people to follow the messengers is named in the commentaries Habib al-Najjar, “the man of Ya Sin”; his people killed him, he was admitted to paradise, and the speaker presents him as a model of steadfastness and a good end. ⁶³ ⁶⁴
He holds that many messengers sent to one people is no sign of their goodness but of their many ills, as many doctors point to many diseases. ⁶⁵ ⁶⁶
On provision: it is in heaven, not in the central bank or the company; he tells the story of Sulayman and the ant that ate one grain and kept the other once its provision lay in a creature's hand, and asks how the unborn child was provided for in the womb. ⁶⁷ ⁶⁸ ⁶⁹ ⁷⁰
He reports the scholars' saying that a person is born crying while his family laughs, so he should work until he leaves the world laughing while they weep. ⁷⁰ ⁷¹

Episode 6: Dhu al-Qarnayn

He tells the story of Dhu al-Qarnayn, whom God established in the land and gave a means to everything, and who followed the means; he reports the scholars' saying that the world was ruled by two believers and two unbelievers: Dhu al-Qarnayn and Sulayman, Nimrod and Nebuchadnezzar. ⁷² ⁷³ ⁷⁴

Faith, he says, is not wishful thinking but what settles in the heart and is confirmed by deeds; a Muslim who lies, takes bribes and backbites turns non-Muslims away from Islam. ⁷⁴ ⁷⁵ ⁷⁶
At the mention of Gog and Magog he lists the major signs of the Hour as he narrates them, and says that once the sun rises from the west repentance is closed. ⁷⁷ ⁷⁸ ⁷⁹
His lesson: the people waited for Dhu al-Qarnayn to build their barrier although the materials and the manpower were theirs; today, he argues, Arabs and Muslims wait for foreign experts while they have the minds and the materials, which he calls “the complex of the vanquished”, and he urges the rich to sponsor gifted children in modern sciences as a continuing charity. This is his view. ⁸⁰ ⁸¹ ⁸² ⁸³
He says that one sincere in his unbelief prevails over one false in his faith, and closes by asking: have we honoured our religion? He calls for reading the Qur'an with reflection, not as one reads a newspaper. ⁸⁴ ⁸⁵ ⁸⁶

Episode 7: Qarun

He presents the story of Qarun as the story of corruption through wealth, the use of a favour to disobey the One who gave it, and says that a servant will be asked where his wealth came from and on what he spent it. ⁸⁷ ⁸⁸ He holds that “hoarding Qarunism” joined to “tyrannical Pharaonism” in a country is corruption itself. ⁸⁹

Gratitude, he says, is the tether of a blessing; what is not tied by gratitude slips away, for the individual and for the state. ⁹⁰ ⁹¹
He distinguishes praiseworthy joy (in obedience, in memorising the Qur'an, in a sinner's repentance) from the blameworthy joy that leads to insolence and arrogance. ⁹² ⁹³ ⁹⁴
He tells that Qarun, asked for the zakat, said he had been given his wealth through knowledge of his own, and that he turned base metals into gold (his account; needs_source). ⁹⁴ ⁹⁵
He distinguishes envy from ghibta, wishing for the like of another's blessing. ⁹⁶ ⁹⁷
He says that blessing is stripped from the provision of one who prays the dawn prayer after sunrise, and that ample provision is no sign of God's pleasure nor scant provision of His anger. ⁹⁸ ⁹⁹ ¹⁰⁰

Episode 8: Sulayman, the hoopoe and Bilqis

He begins with God's apportioning of livelihoods: there are heirs of knowledge, of prophethood and of wealth, and the greatest thing given to Dawud and Sulayman, beyond the wind, the jinn and the birds, was beneficial knowledge, not certificates without practice. ¹⁰¹ ¹⁰² ¹⁰³ ¹⁰⁴ He then tells how Sulayman inspected the birds and missed the hoopoe, and draws lessons in management from it. ¹⁰⁴ ¹⁰⁵

A manager, he says, must stay alert to his staff, reward and punish, and not treat the diligent and the flatterer alike; and whoever sees another angry should withdraw until he calms down. ¹⁰⁵ ¹⁰⁶
Sulayman did not take the hoopoe's report at face value but checked it, and the small hoopoe in his kingdom became the cause of a whole nation's guidance. ¹⁰⁷ ¹⁰⁸ ¹⁰⁹
He describes Bilqis as shrewd: she consulted her people and sent a gift to test Sulayman, and her envoys found the road to his throne paved with gold. ¹¹⁰ ¹¹¹ ¹¹² ¹¹³
From her entry into the palace he draws the lesson that civilisation lies in modesty and in keeping to values: she was a queen, and she wore long garments. This is his view. ¹¹⁴
He closes by asking listeners never to belittle a person or a trade, and to keep humility and leave pride and self-admiration. ¹⁰⁹ ¹¹⁵
