In the lexicon, ijaba means the return of speech; it is the same as istijaba. It is called a reply only after a request. 1 A reply may be given by act, such as accepting an invitation to a wedding feast, by speech, by an understood gesture, or by silence, as the silence of a virgin when asked for consent to marriage. 1 Its ruling depends on what is asked: it is obligatory in answering the call to Islam, a cry for help and a summons before a judge; recommended, as in answering the call to prayer by repeating it; and forbidden when the call is to sin. 2 In contracts the reply is called acceptance (qabul), the answer to an offer. 2

In the lexicon, add is gripping a thing with the teeth and holding it. If a person bites another without right and a wound results, the biter must pay the damages for the wound, assessed as a just award by experts. If one man bites another's hand and the bitten man pulls it free so that the biter's front teeth fall out, most jurists hold that there is no liability, relying on a prophetic judgement in such a case; the Shafi'is limit this to a bitten man who chose the easiest means of release, and the preferred Maliki view requires compensation.
