Overview

Fez al-Jadid is the new city founded by Sultan Abu Yusuf Yaqub ibn Abd al-Haqq al-Marini, alongside the old city of Fez. 1

Founding

Ibn Khaldun reports that when the sultan had settled in the west, his rule was secure, and his entourage and his visitors had grown, he decided to lay out a city to house his commanders and troops. He founded the new city as the seat of the Marinid dynasty and the residence of its sultan and army. 1

He then ordered the building of the citadel of the city of Meknes. 1
