Idla (connection by descent: the ranking of heirs and custodians by the line that links them)

إدلاء

Idla literally means lowering a bucket into a well, and was then used for any sending down. The jurists use it mostly in inheritance and custody for the tie of descent that links a person to the deceased or the child in custody. Someone who connects directly is preferred over one who connects through another, and one who connects by two lines over one who connects by a single line. 1

Meaning

In the lexicon, idla is lowering a bucket into a well to draw water, and the word was then used figuratively for sending anything down. One "puts forward" an argument (adla bi-hujjatihi) when he produces it, "hands over" his property (adla ilayhi bi-malihi) when he delivers it, and connects to the deceased by sonship (adla ila al-mayyit bil-bunuwwa) when he links himself to him through that tie. The jurists' use does not depart from this lexical sense. 1

General ruling and where it is discussed

The jurists use the word mostly in the chapters on inheritance and custody, where idla by descent means the tie that links a person to the deceased or to the child in custody. They rank the one who connects directly ahead of the one who connects through another, and the one who connects by two lines ahead of the one who connects by a single line. 1
