Ottoman-Islamic versus Turanian-Turkish nationalism
القومية العثمانية الإسلامية والقومية التركية الطورانية
In Arslan's commentary on Stoddard, two currents among Ottoman Turks are described: an Ottoman-Islamic one that roots Ottoman culture in Arabic and Persian learning, and a Turanian one that stresses Turkic-Mongol origins and wants Arabic and Persian loanwords removed from Turkish. Arslan reports the Turanian camp's admiration for Chinggis Khan. The entry describes his account as a participant's view and is not a neutral verdict.

Overview
In his commentary on The Present State of the Islamic World, Shakib Arslan presents a dispute between two currents in Ottoman Turkish circles. This description is as the author reports it from its adherents, and it is not a neutral judgement. 1
The two currents
The first current holds that Ottoman identity is Islamic at its root, built on Arab and Persian culture. The Turanian current gives priority to Turkish and Mongol origins, and inclines to purify the language of what was borrowed from Arabic and Persian. 1
Arslan reports that the partisans of the Turanian current count the Mongols as their origin, which he denies and regards as one of the opinions of the other current. Arslan himself leans toward the Islamic current, so his words are to be read as his own view. 1
A further, independent source is needed on the Turanian movement, such as a study of Ottoman intellectual history.
