Overview

In Sha'ban 652 AH the amir Fares al-Din Aqtay, a Turkish Salihi Najmi, was killed. 2

His career as the Shadharat tells it

Ibn al-Imad describes him as brave and generous. al-Salih bought him for a thousand dinars. When power passed to his comrade al-Malik al-Mu'izz, Aqtay, as Ibn al-Imad says, went to great lengths in humiliating others and in tyranny, and used to ride as a king rides. He married the daughter of the lord of Hama, and asked al-Mu'izz for the Citadel of the Mountain (the Cairo citadel) to hold his wedding in it. 2

His killing

al-Mu'izz and his wife Shajar al-Durr agreed on his killing and arranged it, and the gates of the citadel were closed. His mamluks, who numbered seven hundred, rode out and surrounded the citadel. His head was thrown down to them, and they dispersed. 2
