Summary

The Qulayb: a covered well in the land of Badr into which the bodies of the slain polytheists were cast after the battle, and the Prophet stood over it calling to them 1.

What happened

When the battle ended, the polytheist dead were ordered thrown into the Qulayb; then the Prophet stood at its edge calling them by name: "O so-and-so son of so-and-so, and so-and-so son of so-and-so, were you ill tribesmen to your Prophet? Do you confirm that God fulfilled His promise to you?" 1 2.

Umar asked him: do you speak to the dead, who cannot hear? He answered that they hear what he says no less than they do; the book says the address was rebuke and declaration, not a question expecting an answer 1.
