Overview

al-Mas'udi relates that Ya'qub ibn al-Layth al-Saffar marched toward Iraq in 262 AH with great armies, until he camped at Dayr al-Aqul on the bank of the Tigris between Wasit and Baghdad. 2

The battle

The caliph al-Mu'tamid was at Samarra with al-Qa'im, and he appointed his son al-Mufawwad as deputy. Then al-Muwaffaq Abu Ahmad al-Saffar engaged Ya'qub on Sunday, nine nights into Rajab 262 AH, at the Sayb of the Banu Kuma, and Ya'qub was routed, and al-Mu'tamid was spared his scheming. 2
