In 320 AH Muhammad al-Qahir bi-Llah was given the oath of the caliphate on Thursday, two nights before the end of Shawwal. 1

al-Tabari's account

al-Qahir was moved from the house of Abd Allah ibn Tahir to the palace of the caliphate, and was given the oath and called al-Qahir bi-Llah. 1 2

al-Suyuti's account

al-Suyuti says that he was first given this title in 317 AH, when Munis and the emirs gave him their oath after the deposing of al-Muqtadir. He sat on Sunday, but al-Muqtadir was restored on the third day. He was given the oath a second time when al-Muqtadir was killed in 320 AH, after Ibn al-Muktafi had refused and said that his uncle had a better right to it. 3
