سقوط الجزيرة الخضراء وكسرة الأسطول

سقوط الجزيرة الخضراء وكسرة الأسطول

c. March 1344 CE · c. 744 AH

The fall of Algeciras and the straits disaster: Abu al-Hasan al-Marini built great fleets for the jihad and answered Andalus's summons in person at Ceuta, but countless Christian ships barred the crossing until they took the Green Island and broke his fleet utterly — the loss he himself reported in his letter to Sultan al-Salih of Egypt and the Hijaz 1.

Overview

Al-Maqqari reports that the sultan Abu al-Hasan al-Marini equipped many fleets for the holy war in al-Andalus, and the Franks seized al-Jazira al-Khadra and many of those ships. 1

The account

Al-Maqqari says that the Franks gathered large hosts to seize what remained of the Muslims' land. The people of al-Andalus called on Sultan Abu al-Hasan, who came himself to Ceuta. The Franks had come with uncountable ships, and they stopped him from crossing and from helping the people of al-Andalus, until they took al-Jazira al-Khadra and broke him in his ships. A letter he sent to the sultans of Egypt, Syria and the Hijaz makes this plain. 1

واقعة طريف وتمحيص المسلمين

Sultan Abu al-Hasan crossed in late 740 and encamped before Tarifa; Yusuf I of Granada joined him with the Andalus army, they ringed the town and set engines — but the Taghiya's second fleet sealed the Strait, starved the camp, and he mustered the Christian nations with Afonso of Portugal at his side; a hidden force he slipped into Tarifa by night burst on the Muslim rear as battle joined, their lines dissolved, the royal women were taken — Aisha the sultan's cousin and Fatima among them — and the Christian king's power over the Andalus frontier was sealed.
