سقوط الملك المغيث صاحب الكرك

c. 1263 CE · c. 662 AH

Baybars rode to Syria and by stratagem brought down al-Mughith, lord of Karak — the last of him, for he had corresponded with Hulagu promising him Egypt and asking twenty thousand horse; when his letters were found in Egypt and read to the scholars, they ruled that one who did this might not be left alive 1.

Overview

The "Shadharat al-Dhahab" relates that al-Zahir Baybars went out to Syria and tricked the lord of Karak, the king al-Mughith, until he came down to him, and that this was the last time he was seen. 1

The cause according to the source

Ibn al-Imad says that al-Mughith had written to Hulagu agreeing that he would take Egypt for him, and had asked him for twenty thousand horsemen. Baybars brought out his letters in Egypt and read them to the scholars, who ruled that such a man should not be spared. 1

What is not covered here

The data does not say exactly how al-Mughith's end came about, nor the view of other sources on the accusation. This needs an additional source.

Date

The data dates the event to the early sixties, that is about 662 AH (around 1263 CE), a derived and uncertain date. A second source is needed. 1
