فتح النوبة وأسر ملك دنقلة
فتح النوبة وأسر ملك دنقلة
c. 1275 CE · 674 AH
In 674 Baybars sent an army to Nubia and Dunqula: victorious, they captured Nubia's king and laid the jizya on Dunqula's people — the first true conquest. Al-Dhahabi lists the failed attempts: Abd Allah ibn Abi Sarh's five thousand in 31 — a truce, no conquest — then under Hisham, al-Mansur, Takin the Turk, Kafur the Ikhshid, Nasir al-Dawla ibn Hamdan, and Saladin's brother Turanshah in 568. Ibn Abd al-Zahir: 'This is the conquest — nothing you've heard of; seen by the eye, not found in isnads' 1.

Summary
In 674 AH the sultan al-Zahir Baybars sent an army to Nubia and Dongola. They were victorious; the king of Nubia was captured and sent to the sultan, and a poll tax was placed on the people of Dongola. 2
Earlier attempts
The source relates from al-Dhahabi that Nubia was first attacked in 31 AH, when Abdallah ibn Abi Sarh raided it with five thousand horsemen. He made a truce with its people and returned without conquering it. It was attacked again in the time of Hisham and in the time of al-Mansur; then Takin the Turk, Kafur al-Ikhshidi and Nasir al-Dawla ibn Hamdan attacked it, and then Turanshah, brother of Saladin, in 568 AH. It had not been conquered until this year. 2
Ibn Abd al-Zahir said of this: "This conquest was witnessed with the eye, not something known only from chains of transmission." 2
