the second day of al-Kullāb — the eight thousand of Madhḥij broken by Tamīm

يوم الكلاب الثاني — مسير بني الحرث بن كعب على تميم

c. 610 CE

al-Kullab

After the door was shut on Tamīm at al-Mushaqqar, a man of Qays ibn Thaʿlaba told his uncles Banū'l-Ḥārith ibn Kaʿb of Najrān that Tamīm's warriors lay dead and their wealth undefended. Banū'l-Ḥārith of Madhḥij mustered with their Nahd and Jarm allies — eight thousand, the largest host known in the Jāhiliyya save Khusraw's at Dhu Qār and the host of Jabala — and overrode their diviner Salama ibn al-Mughaffal's warning. Tamīm's elders put the choice to Aktham ibn Ṣayfī, then a hundred and ninety years old, who declined the chieftaincy but counseled splitting the defense at al-Dahnāʾ and al-Kullāb, keeping women from the ranks and voices low. The hosts met at al-Kullāb; Madhḥij broke, and their captive chief ʿAbd Yaghūth was killed after they bound his tongue — yet he still recited his famous verses. No ransom was taken 1.

Summary

The Second Day of al-Kullab was one of the greatest days of Tamim. After their fighting men had been killed at al-Mushaqqar, the people of Najran from the Banu al-Harith ibn Ka'b of Madhhij marched against them with their allies Nahd and Juram, eight thousand strong. It was one of the largest gatherings of the pre-Islamic age. The Tamim disobeyed their soothsayer Salama ibn al-Mughaffal, who had warned them, and consulted Aktham ibn Sayfi, who was then one hundred and ninety years old. He declined leadership, and advised that Hanzala ibn Malik camp at al-Dahna, and that Sa'd ibn Zayd Manat and al-Rabab camp at al-Kilab. He charged them to keep the women away from the battle lines, to reduce disputes with their commanders, and to avoid shouting in battle. They met the enemy at al-Kilab. Madhhij was routed and its chief, Abd Yaghuth ibn al-Harith, was taken prisoner. They tied his tongue so that he could not satirise them. He recited his well-known poem, then was killed, and no ransom was accepted for him. 1

The delegation of Banu Tamim and the boasting contest

Utarid ibn Hajib led the notables of Banu Tamim to the Prophet in 9 AH, with al-Aqra' ibn Habis, al-Zibriqan ibn Badr, Amr ibn al-Ahtam, al-Hutat ibn Yazid, Qays ibn Asim and others, and Uyayna ibn Hisn with them. They called him from behind his apartments, then challenged him to a boasting contest; Thabit ibn Qays answered Utarid and Hassan answered al-Zibriqan, al-Aqra' conceded that the Muslims' orator and poet were better, and they embraced Islam and were given gifts. The opening of sura al-Hujurat was revealed about them.
