the day of al-Nabaj and Thaytal — Qays ibn ʿĀṣim's two raids

يوم النباج وثيتل — غزوة قيس بن عاصم

c. 590 CE

al-Nabaj

Qays ibn ʿĀṣim the Minqarī raided the Lahāzim of Bakr at al-Nabaj: he watered his horses, poured out every skin they carried — «fight: death is before you and the waste is behind you» — and broke Bakr for spoil beyond count, then galloped on to Thaytal and beat a second force for nearly as much again. His companion Salama ibn Ẓarib, whose quarry he had taken, nearly came to blows with him over the spoils until they agreed to yield them to him 1.

Summary

The Day of al-Nabaj and Thaytal: Qays ibn Asim (may God be pleased with him) al-Minqari raided with the Maqa'is of Tamim, with Salama ibn Zarb among the Aharith. They found the Lahazim of Bakr ibn Wa'il and those with them at al-Nabaj and Thaytal. Qays attacked al-Nabaj, watered his horses, then poured out the water the enemy had. He told his men to fight, since death was before them and the desert behind them. Bakr was routed, and he took booty beyond counting. He then hurried toward Thaytal, attacked them there too, and they were routed; he took booty there as well. He disputed the booty with Salama until they agreed to hand it over to him. 1

The delegation of Banu Tamim and the boasting contest

Utarid ibn Hajib led the notables of Banu Tamim to the Prophet in 9 AH, with al-Aqra' ibn Habis, al-Zibriqan ibn Badr, Amr ibn al-Ahtam, al-Hutat ibn Yazid, Qays ibn Asim and others, and Uyayna ibn Hisn with them. They called him from behind his apartments, then challenged him to a boasting contest; Thabit ibn Qays answered Utarid and Hassan answered al-Zibriqan, al-Aqra' conceded that the Muslims' orator and poet were better, and they embraced Islam and were given gifts. The opening of sura al-Hujurat was revealed about them.
