Overview

The sources cited here give two meanings of the name, and the data does not show that they refer to one group. A second source is needed.

Banu Hammad al-Mawasila

Ibn al-Nadim says they were the proponents of the mission in al-Jazira and its surroundings, on behalf of Abu Ya'qub al-Sijistani, the deputy of the resident Imam, who was in al-Ray. They wrote books and attributed them to Abdan, among them "The Clear Truth" and "The Manifest Truth". 2

In Ibn Khaldun's history

Ibn Khaldun says that the kingdom of Sanhaja split in the days of Badis ibn al-Mansur ibn Buluggin into two states: one for al-Mansur ibn Buluggin, the people of Kairouan, and one for Hammad ibn Buluggin in al-Qal'a. 3
