the yearning palm-trunk

الجذع الحنّان

The palm-trunk the Prophet ﷺ leaned on while preaching before the minbar was made, which yearned when he left it. Later generations popularly held that a lead-fastened wooden piece in the pillar facing the Rawda was a remnant of it — Ibn Jubayr saw people kissing and blessing themselves by a visible piece set in a column — but al-Samhudi disputes this, judging it likelier a remnant of the staff of the prayer station, and records that 'Izz al-Din ibn Jama'a ordered its removal in 855 AH 1.

Overview

The trunk of the palm tree against which the Prophet used to preach before the pulpit was made; it yearned for him when he left it. 2

What became known later

It became known that a piece of wood fixed with lead in the pillar of the noble prayer hall, opposite the Rawda, was a remnant of it. Ibn Jubayr, in his travel account, mentions that people used to kiss a visible piece of it in a pillar and seek blessing by wiping it. 2

Al-Samhudi's view

Al-Samhudi disputed this and preferred that the piece came from the Standing Staff, not from the trunk. He mentioned that Izz al-Din ibn Jama'a ordered it removed in 855 AH. 2
