Overview
An instrument made by Ibn al-Shatir, the timekeeper (muwaqqit), in Damascus. He found that astronomical instruments do not serve all astronomical tasks at every latitude, and that error creeps into most of the work they are used for. 2
Its purpose
He made the "Complete Quadrant" (al-rub' al-tamm) so that all the tasks could be carried out in every climate, with ease of aim and clarity of proof, according to the Kashf al-Zunun. 2
