Summary

Ali Mustafa Mosharafa was professor of applied mathematics at the Egyptian University, holding a PhD and a DSc from the University of London, as the title page of the Cairo edition of al-Khwarizmi's Book of al-Jabr and al-Muqabala states. 1

The edition of al-Khwarizmi

With his colleague Muhammad Mursi Ahmad, Mosharafa introduced and annotated al-Khwarizmi's book, published as the second publication of the Faculty of Science of the Egyptian University by the press of Fath Allah Ilyas Nuri and Sons in Cairo in 1939. 1 2 The two signed the preface on 26 September 1937. 3 In it they say that nations care for their scientific heritage because it is spiritual nourishment for their scholars, and that scientific glory must appear "in tangible form" through publishing the ancestors' books that shaped human thought, foremost among them al-Khwarizmi's. 4 They hope that they and others will publish further scientific books scattered in the world's museums and libraries so that they reach the educated Arab public. 3 The edition includes a chapter on algebra before al-Khwarizmi in which the editors argue that modern research has revealed the importance of the Egyptian and Islamic ages in the history of science. 5

Other work

The list of Faculty of Science publications bound with the edition includes a book on descriptive geometry by Dr Ali Mustafa Mosharafa Bey and Muhammad al-Hami al-Kardani. 6
