Summary

A man of Banu Ka'b of Khuza'a who stood before the Prophet in Medina's mosque adjuring him by the fathers' pact after the aggression at al-Watir; his verses — in Ibn Ishaq's words — were "among what stirred the conquest of Mecca" 1.

The appeal

Amr ibn Salim stood in the mosque reciting the verses of his famous appeal, among them: "O Lord, I adjure Muhammad / by our fathers' and his father's old pact", asking aid for Banu Ka'b and describing how they were surprised at al-Watir and killed bowing and prostrating 1.

The Prophet answered him: "you are aided, Amr ibn Salim" 2. In al-Isti'ab's account: "I am not aided if I do not aid Banu Ka'b ibn Abd Manaf and Abd al-Wulud as I would aid them" 2. It is related that when Banu Ka'b afterwards entered the mosque they saw a cloud moving, and were told: it is for Banu Ka'b 2.

For young visitors

He was a poet of a tribe attacked at night while at peace. He came to Medina and stood reciting verse begging for aid, and the Prophet answered him with a single word: "aided".

Budayl ibn Warqa' al-Khuza'i

A Khuza'i leader of the truce years: he sheltered the driven-in Khuza'a in his house, led their complaint delegation to Medina, met Abu Sufyan at Usfan while concealing his own visit, and scouted the Muslim army with him at Marr al-Zahran — where he slipped away to warn the Prophet. As 'Budayl ibn Umm Asram' he answered al-Akhzar's war poem.
