Overview

Hammad al-Turki, chamberlain of the caliph al-Mansur. Al-Mas'udi reports from him an account of the night on which a letter came announcing the rising of Muhammad ibn Abd Allah. 2.

The account

Hammad tells, of himself, that al-Rabi' brought him the packet announcing the rising of Muhammad ibn Abd Allah, while al-Mansur was asleep in a monastery on the bank of the Tigris, at a place now called al-Khuld in the City of Peace. Al-Mansur heard his words, rose and opened the door with his own hand, read the letters, and then ordered the horses saddled and the advance made. 2.
