Overview

Ilig Khan Sulayman al-Khaqani, brother of Bughra Khan, whose title was Shahir al-Dawla. He took the Turkish kingship at Kashgar after his brother, then entered Bukhara in 389 AH, which ended the rule of the Samanids. 1

Kingship

Ibn Khaldun says that after his brother his rule over Turkestan and its districts was secured. He honoured the servant Faʾiq for the wars he had suffered in Khurasan, and interceded for him with the Amir Nuh, who then appointed him over Samarqand. 1

Entering Bukhara

He coveted the kingship of Bukhara, and marched with the Turkish hosts, pretending to defend Abd al-Malik. He seized Bakjkarzun, the amirs and the commanders. He entered Bukhara on the tenth of Dhu al-Qa'da 389 AH, "according to the reading of the text", that is, as the printed text has it. He took up residence in the palace of the amirate, imprisoned Abd al-Malik until he died, and imprisoned with him Mansur, Abu al-Harith, who had been deposed. 1

He then clashed with Isma'il al-Mustansir al-Samani and defeated him in the districts of Usrushana. 1

Note

The relationship data describe him as "judge of the Samanid state", which does not agree with the report, and so it has not been used here. It needs an additional source, and needs to be linked to the Qarakhanid state.

Bughra Khan al-Qarakhani

Bughra Khan of the Qarakhanid Turkic kings; drawn into the Samanid lands by Abu Ali ibn Simjur's tempting of him with Bukhara in that dynasty's collapse, he took their country piece by piece, routed Nuh ibn Mansur's armies and captured his commander Anj, entered Bukhara until Nuh's return — then, departing sick, died on the road in the year the text reads as 403 of the fourth century; pious, just, of good conduct, a Sunni-leaning honourer of scholars, succeeded by his brother Ilig Khan Sulayman.
