عمران بن حطان الرقاشي

The Kharijite poet whose praise of Ibn Muljim's blow ('a pious man's strike, seeking only the Throne-Lord's pleasure') drew qadi Abu'l-Tayyib al-Shafi'i's famous counter-verse — among the most quoted poetry of the assassination 1.

Overview

Imran ibn Hittan al-Raqqashi, a Kharijite poet. Al-Mas'udi mentions him in an account of the blow that struck Ali at the hand of Ibn Muljam. 1

The verses and their reply

He praised Ibn Muljam's blow in a verse whose sense is that it was the blow of a pious man who intended nothing but reaching God's good pleasure. The judge Abu al-Tayyib Tahir ibn Abdallah al-Shafi'i answered him with a verse whose sense is that it was the blow of a wretch who meant to destroy the pillars of Islam. 1

Al-Mas'udi counts these two verses among the best known things said about that event. 1

His life dates are not recorded in the data. They need an additional source.
