Overview
Qatada ibn Di'ama al-Sadusi. Ibn al-Nadim relays from Ibn al-Ikhshid that after al-Hasan died, Qatada sat in his circle. Amr ibn Ubayd and a group withdrew from it, and Qatada named them the Mu'tazila. Amr then showed his acceptance of the name, and said that "withdrawal" (i'tizal) is a quality God praised in His book. 2
al-Shirazi says he was born in 60 AH, died in 117 AH, and was blind. 3 The Gregorian dates in the record are derived from the Hijri dates.
