Overview

Tarif ibn Malik led the reconnaissance expedition to al-Andalus. The book says it numbered five hundred soldiers, among them a hundred horsemen, and that he was a Muslim Berber 1.

The expedition

The expedition crossed from Ceuta in Ramadan of the year 91 AH (July 710 CE), and landed near an island that was later known by his name. It toured the region, and sent groups to Jabal Tariq and elsewhere 1.

According to the book itself, its information formed the basis of the conquest plan.
