Overview

Urwa ibn Udhayna al-Tamimi, brother of Bilal the Kharijite. al-Mas'udi reports that he was the first to say "There is no judgement but God's" when al-Ash'ath passed by him, while he was reading the arbitration document to the Banu Tamim with joy 2.

His stand on the document

Urwa said to al-Ash'ath: "Do you make men judges in the religion of God?" Then he charged him with his sword. The blow fell on the rump of his horse, and al-Ash'ath escaped 2.

Who was the first to arbitrate?

al-Mas'udi reports elsewhere that it was said that Urwa was the first to arbitrate at Siffin, and it was said Yazid ibn Asim al-Muharibi, and it was said a man of the Banu Sa'd ibn Zayd Manat. The question is therefore disputed in his view 3.
