Overview

al-Salabi's book "The Umayyad State" reports that Zayd ibn al-Hasan ibn Ali (may God be pleased with him) wrote from Medina to al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik, agreeing with him on the deposition of Sulayman, out of fear of al-Walid 1.

The letter

When Sulayman succeeded, he ordered his governor in Medina to question him about the letter. When he admitted it, Sulayman ordered him flogged with a hundred lashes and made to walk barefoot. Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz detained the messenger, and said that he would not leave until he had spoken to the caliph. Sulayman fell ill, and the affair passed to Umar, who tore up the letter 1.

This is what the book reports, and the account of the punishment is as it appears in it.
