Overview
al-Meriyya (Almeria): an Andalusian city on the sea coast. al-Maqqari reports that it has the impregnable fortress known as the Fortress of Khayran, built by Abd al-Rahman al-Nasir, and that it grew in importance in the state of al-Mansur, who appointed his client Khayran over it. 2
Its crafts and buildings
Al-Meriyya excelled all other lands in the craft of silk brocade, and there was an arsenal in it. al-Maqqari reports that eight hundred looms there wove silk bands, and that the looms for fine robes, brocade, aslaqlat and Jurjani and Isfahani garments reached a million looms, and that the baths and inns numbered about a thousand. Its district includes iron and marble mines. 2
Abu Ja'far Ibn Khatima wrote a history there, which he named "The Excellence of Almeria". 2
