Jabal Thawr of Medina

جبل ثور بالمدينة

A small mountain in Medina near Uhud, named in the haram hadith 'between 'Ayr and Thawr is inviolable' as the northern limit; it was obscure enough that Mus'ab al-Zubayri declared 'Medina knows no 'Ayr and no Thawr', and Abu 'Ubayd al-Qasim ibn Sallam and al-Hazimi held the original reading to be 'from 'Ayr to Uhud', while others argued an unknown name does not impugn the transmitters 1. Distinct from Mecca's Jabal Thawr.

Overview

Mount Thawr in Medina is a small mountain in the land of Medina, different from Mount Thawr in Mecca. It is mentioned in the report on the sanctity of Medina, "what lies between Ayr and Thawr is sacred", as the northern boundary of the sanctuary of Medina. 2

The name's obscurity

The mountain was obscure to some later transmitters. Al-Samhudi reports Mus'ab al-Zubayri saying: "Neither Ayr nor Thawr is known in Medina." Abu Ubayd al-Qasim ibn Salam and al-Hazimi held that the original reading was "from Ayr to Uhud". Others held that the obscurity of the name does not cast doubt on the transmitters. 2
