Overview

Marand is a city in Azerbaijan that was once a small village, settled by Halbas, father of al-Bu'ayth. Then al-Bu'ayth fortified it, followed by his son Muhammad ibn al-Bu'ayth, who built palaces there. When he rebelled in the caliphate of al-Mutawakkil, Bugha al-Saghir fought him until he prevailed over him, and he demolished its wall and his palace. 1

An additional source is needed for the page number. The data reads "Bana al-Saghir", and the correct form is probably "Bugha al-Saghir".

Muhammad ibn al-Ba'ith's Revolt

Marand was a small village settled by Halbas Abu al-Ba'ith, fortified by al-Ba'ith then his son Muhammad ibn al-Ba'ith who built palaces there; Muhammad broke away in al-Mutawakkil's caliphate, and Buna al-Saghir the caliph's mawla fought him till he took him, carried him to Samarra, and razed Marand's wall and that palace — the Ba'ithids descending from Utayb ibn Amr of Asad ibn Rabi'a, or Utayb ibn Awf ibn Sinan as the Utaybis tell it.
