Overview
The River of al-Maymun is a river in al-Sawad. Al-Baladhuri relates that the first to dig it was an agent of Umm Ja'far Zubayda bint Ja'far ibn al-Mansur, called Sa'id ibn Zayd, and its mouth was at a village called Qaryat Maymun. It was later diverted in the days of al-Wathiq, by the hand of Umar ibn Faraj al-Rakhkhaji. It was named al-Maymun so that the notion of blessing (al-yumn) would not be lost from it. 1
