Overview

The River Maqil is one of the rivers of Basra. Al-Baladhuri mentions that it was named after Maqil ibn Yasar al-Muzani. Ziyad sent him, and he opened it, seeking blessing through his companionship, and people said "the River of Maqil". No one called it the River of Ziyad, although Ziyad dug it. 1
