Overview

Al-Qulzum is a sea and a road. Al-Baladhuri mentions that al-Mutawakkil appointed Muhammad ibn Abd Allah al-Qummi over the affairs of the mine in Egypt and the road to the Hijaz. Grain was carried from it by ships to the lands of the Beja. 1

Dhanab al-Timsah (the Crocodile's Tail)

A mile from it is a site known as Dhanab al-Timsah. A king of the Romans dug a channel there toward the Roman sea, but it did not join, because of the height of the Qulzum. On it is a great bridge which the pilgrim caravans of Egypt cross. 2
