Overview

Shibam is a city in the land of Hadramawt. Another city lies about a stage from it, and the two stand on the ascending road from Aden, according to al-Idrisi. 3

Al-Hamdani derives its name from the people of Shabwa, who left and settled in Hadramawt when Himyar and Madhhij fought each other. He holds that the original form was "shabah", and then the mim replaced the ha'. 4

Shabwa

An old Himyarite city between Bayhan and Hadramawt with a salt mountain whose second ridge belonged to Ma'rib. Al-Hamdani reports: when Himyar and Madhhij warred, the people of Shabwa abandoned it for Hadramawt, and from them Shibam took its name — 'the original was Shabah, the mim replacing the ha'.
