Short answer
The adhan is the public call to prayer in a fixed form: Allahu akbar, the two testimonies, 'come to prayer' and 'come to success'.
Detailed answer
The adhan is a visible rite of Islam. It announces the start of the prayer time and calls people to it 1. The entry on the adhan sets out its wording and timing, and it is linked to the prayer to which it calls.
