Short answer

Taqwa is when a servant places between himself and what he fears and dreads a shield that protects him from it. It is a meaning the Qur'an repeats when it commands worship.

Detailed answer

Taqwa, in language and in the Islamic law, is when a person places a shield between himself and what he dreads. In Islam it is the fear of God and obedience to Him, as the entry Taqwa sets out. The Qur'an links fasting to taqwa in Al-Baqara 183, so fasting counts among the means to taqwa, as the entry Fasting in Ramadan sets out. It is a meaning from which many moral qualities and acts of worship branch out. The entry Iman explains its connection to belief.
