Short answer
The Qur'an is the speech of God revealed to the Prophet ﷺ Muhammad. Muslims recite it in prayer and outside it, and it is the first reference for belief and law.
Detailed answer
The Qur'an is the speech of God, which He sent down to the Prophet Muhammad as revelation. Muslims believe that it is uncreated, as Al-Tahawi affirms in his creed. The entry The speech of God explains this meaning in detail. Muslims recite it in prayer and outside it, and they turn to it for belief, worship and ethics. The community has preserved it in written copies. The Qur'anic text used on this site is taken from the approved Tanzil file, and Qur'anic text is not written out in these entries except by reference. Those who wish to begin will find a general entry on The speech of God, and the entry on the shahada The shahada offers an example of what belief is built upon.
