Summary

"al-Jawab al-Sahih li-man Baddala Din al-Masih" (The Correct Answer to Whoever Altered the Religion of Christ) by Ibn Taymiyya (661–728 AH) 1. He wrote it as a reply to a letter that reached him from Cyprus and was attributed to a monk. The preface to the edition says that the reply follows the order of the letter itself 2.

Method of the reply

The preface explains that in the first chapters the author replied to those who claimed that the mission was for the Arabs alone. He then argued that alteration had occurred in the beliefs of Christians and Jews, using texts from earlier books and from the Qur'an and the Sunna 3.

The Hanbali-Ash'ari Fitna at Damascus, 835

835: a great fitna flared at Damascus between Hanbalis and Ash'aris — Ala' al-Din al-Bukhari openly declared takfir of Ibn Taymiyya; Damascenes rallied to him; Ibn Nasir al-Din composed a fascicle of his praisers which Cairo's scholars endorsed; and a sultanic decree forbade impugning another's madhhab until the matter subsided.
