The temples of the seven planets
البيوت المعظمة على أسماء الكواكب
The report that seven great houses were raised to the planets — the Ka'ba named Saturn's for its endurance, Isfahan's Maris, India's magnet-shrine Mandusan, Manushihr's lunar Nawbahar at Balkh whose wardens took the title Barmak, and al-Dahhak's Venus-temple Ghumdan at San'a' — each idol-house built when the stars were seen to hide 1.

Overview
According to al-Masudi, some people held that among the seven revered houses named after the planets is the Sacred House (the Ka'ba), and they said it is the house of Saturn, which is why it has lasted long, since Saturn's nature is endurance. There is the house of Mars on a mountain in Isfahan, which made it always fierce in its fire. There is the house of Mandusan in India, in which are magnetic stones. There is the Nawbahar in Balkh, built by Manushihr in the name of the Moon, whose custodians were the Barmakids, a mark of whoever held that office. There is the house of Ghumdan in Sana'a, built by al-Dahhak in the name of Venus. These peoples took idols and images of the planets in their likeness, and built for each idol a house and a shrine, because they saw the planets disappear, and their sages commanded them to do so. 2
Ibn Fadl Allah al-Umari, citing al-Bakri, lists: the house of Istakhr for Jupiter; the house of Mandarsan in India for Mars; the house of Ka'wasan in Farghana for the Sun, which al-Mu'tasim demolished; the house of Tamdan in Sana'a, built by al-Dahhak for Venus, which 'Uthman ibn Affan (may God be pleased with him) ruined, so that its site became a pool; a house in the upper parts of China for Mercury, consisting of seven houses, each with seven windows, facing each of the twenty-five images of the planets; and the Nawbahar in Balkh for the Moon. 3
